Heritage Straps

Strap Review

Mr TipTop Leather from Denmark

Shahram, the strap maker from Mr. TipTop Leather makes great handmade straps and is very clear on the work he is doing on a daily full-time basis, being a leather master craftsman, besides straps he creates bags, pouches, wallets, etc..

The straps

Shahram sent me the straps and received them in leather pouch, although the packaging is of less importance to me personally, it does show an extra attention for detail from the strap maker and it is an easy way to make the straps recognisable. The pouch has two plates, one plate with Mr. TipTop leather details and a Panerai plate, nice touch!

The Heritage straps in this review

In this review I share my experience three heritage straps I combined with my PAM00372 & PAM00389:
- Cognac brown heritage 26mm straight strap with brushed sewn-in Pre-V style buckle
- Dark red brown heritage 26mm straight strap without buckle
- Light brown heritage straight 26mm with antique sewn-in Pre-V style buckle

Top quality leather used, double Croupon

Double Croupon is the highest level of Vacchetta who is meant vegetable tanned leather in Italian. Working with double Croupon is not so easy as the strong surface of this leather doesn't allow you to change the look. The leather is waterproof from the tannery. Not only because it gets special oil treatment. The tanning process , that piece of the hide (from the back of the hide) age of the male calf, and where the calf been growing have a lot of value when the tannery choosing raw hides. Regular good quality hide vegetable tanning process time is about 4 weeks. For double Croupon it is 6-7 weeks. Chrome tanned leather takes 2 days in production line from raw hides to leather.

The cognac brown heritage strap

The heritage strap is the interpretation of Mr. TipTop leather for vintage style straps. The strap has a double sewn loop that makes the buckle sit flatter, stitching is very sharp, the sides are not treated and it came with a Pre-V style brushed steel sewn-in buckle. The strap has a light gold brown stitch in 3 mm, box stitching.

There is a inner skin to give them a heritage look. In old days it was not easy to split leather. Therefore thick leather hides from the tannery were limited. To give a strap more thickness, one extra layer was added.

Edge of the Heritage style been always cut between 0.8 - 1,8 mm to give it round look. Stitching line is more away from edges. Using a quality waxed linen thread is a must.

On the watch

The strap required some extra effort to mount on the watch, knowing that the width is slightly more than 26mm to give it snug fit and the lugs being thicker as well. The Pre-V style buckle is nice and fits well and the strap give a bit of tail and not too much. The leather feels comfortable and has a great texture.

Dark red brown vintage masterpiece strap

This strap has a single sewn loop, is a bit thinner than the previous strap and has a deep red brown color with different shades and details. It is hand dyed to this color and it shows, gives it more character. As it didn't come with a sewn-in buckle, I would have preferred the strap to have a double sewn loop that makes an OEM Pre-V buckle sit a bit flatter on the wrist, a minor personal preference. The sitting on the outside is very sharp, still you can make out that this is a hand-sewn strap when you look at the inside and notice that is not so straight, actually a nice detail.

On the watch

It is a very soft strap and was easy to mount on my PAM000372 and the loop fits tightly on the OEM screw-in buckle. The strap is a bit longer than the other two in this review and the buckle sits more on the side of my wrist and give more tail. The darker stitching has no reference to the dial or indexes of the watch and still looks great and gives it although it is a very sporty strap an dressy look.

Light brown heritage strap

This is for me of the three straps my favorite. It has brown inner 3 mm stitches of linen Japanese beeswax thread in 0.55 light Khalil. The strap has a double sewn looop and an antique sewn-in Pre-V style buckle, had a special hot oil treatment and a 1.2 mm cut-edge and 1.5 mm edge line decoration. The inner lining is very dark brown. The way this strap has been treated with oils, balsam and polishing gives the strap an old and used look, this adds a lot of character to the strap! The small dark details and darker at the top edge looks very natural and if really worn for a long time, however when you turn the strap around you see that this strap is absolutely new!

On the watch

To get this strap on the watch took really some patience and advise from Shahram the lug sides are really thick and I did have a problem with mounting it on my PAM000389, knowing that you can give a bit more force on the pins on a quikc change system than on the screw pins of the PAM000389, I just wasn't able to get it fixed, till I did what Shahram instructed me to do, use a drill machine and just frase a bit out. After that was done the result is just out of this world, because of the thick lug sides, it fits very snug between the lugs and against the case and give a great look. The antique Pre-V style sewn-in buckle fits perfect with the ceramic bezel and the stitching close to the color of the indexes makes it even better.

My conclusion

Mr. TipTop Leather started in 1954 and is a known and dedicated master craftsman strap maker. If you are looking for a quick service you are at the wrong address as everything happens here by hand, there are no machines included in any part of the work to create a strap or any of their other leather accessories.

The heritage straps line of Mr. Tip Top Leather is more than worth considering, the quality is amazing, the finish perfect and knowing by how long it takes him to start creating straps that starts from hides that are first cut to smaller strips that are hanging to rest for some time to the good quality waxed linen he uses and the vintage treatment he gives to create straps that look very genuine, it's more than worth the money. These straps will last for a very long time!

Whatever leather material you order your strap, I do not think you can go wrong with any of them as they all have their own charm, if you want a strap you can hand over to a next generation I would say go for the double croupon leather straps!

The straps have very predominant logos and branding embossed on the inside and this time packed in a leather pouch that has brass engraved plates makes it look even more premium.
